Infectious disease   Human granulocytic anaplasmosis (HGA) is a tick-borne, infectious disease caused by Anaplasma phagocytophilum, an obligate intracellular bacterium that is typically transmitted to humans by ticks of the Ixodes ricinus species complex, including Ixodes scapularis and Ixodes pacificus in North America.Specialty: Infectious disease.

Adult black-legged ticks are the size of a sesame seed.   Both nymph and adult ticks can spread the bacteria that cause HGA; however, nymphs are more of a concern.  They are aggressive feeders and so tiny that it can be difficult to see them on the body, unless you are looking carefully.
